Introduction

Šv. Rašto Kraštuose (In the Lands of the Bible) is a vividly written pilgrimage and archaeological travel narrative by Lithuanian-American biblical scholar Antanas Rubšys, published as volume 21 in the diaspora Catholic book series Krikščionis Gyvenime. Drawing on the author's personal participation in international archaeological expeditions across Italy, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and the Holy Land beginning in June 1976, the book weaves scripture, history, and on-the-ground observation into an accessible Lithuanian-language guide to the biblical world. As a product of the Lithuanian diaspora scholarly community in North America, it represents a sustained effort to bring serious Catholic biblical scholarship to Lithuanian readers scattered across the free world.

Context and significance

Significance

This volume exemplifies the intellectual vitality of the Lithuanian Catholic diaspora during the Soviet occupation era. By commissioning and publishing serious biblical-archaeological scholarship in Lithuanian, the Krikščionis Gyvenime series ensured that the Lithuanian language remained a vehicle for advanced religious and intellectual discourse at a time when such publishing was suppressed in occupied Lithuania. Antanas Rubšys, writing from direct field experience in archaeological expeditions and decades of teaching at American seminaries and colleges, brought world-class biblical scholarship into the Lithuanian vernacular, simultaneously preserving the language and deepening the faith life of dispersed communities.

The book also reflects the particular character of Lithuanian Catholic diaspora culture: deeply rooted in faith, attentive to historical evidence, and committed to the idea that Lithuanian identity and Catholic intellectual tradition are mutually reinforcing. The dedication to 'Tėveliai' (dear parents) and 'Skaitytojui' (the reader) captures a characteristic diaspora posture—personal, communal, and outward-looking at once. For heritage learners and descendants today, this volume offers a window into the remarkable scholarly infrastructure that the Lithuanian diaspora built across North American and European émigré centers.
