This collection reveals that even in the immediate aftermath of displacement — just one year after the war's end — Lithuanian intellectuals and writers in DP camps were organizing independent publishing infrastructure capable of producing illustrated poetry collections. The existence of a named private publisher (Antanas Urbonas) and a named illustrator (Albertas Veščiūnas), alongside formal Allied authorization, demonstrates that the diaspora community was not merely surviving but actively constructing a parallel cultural apparatus complete with the roles of author, publisher, illustrator, and censor-liaison. The handwritten dedication dated 1947 shows this volume circulating socially among Lithuanians within one year of publication, functioning as a cultural gift object as much as a literary text. The thematic content — poems titled 'Tremtinio rezignacija' (Exile's Resignation), 'Be namų' (Without Home), 'Pavasaris užsienio mieste' (Spring in a Foreign City), 'Ne vėliavos' (Not Flags), 'Benamės paukštės' (Homeless Birds) — constitutes a near-complete taxonomy of the DP psychological and existential condition expressed in literary Lithuanian. This is not incidental: the poet was consciously creating a record of the diaspora experience in the language of the homeland, asserting through the very act of Lithuanian-language publishing that cultural continuity was possible outside Lithuania's borders. The title 'Be Tavęs' (Without You) operates simultaneously as personal lyric address and collective national metaphor — the absent 'You' readable as beloved, as homeland, as God, as the prewar Lithuanian life that had been destroyed. This multilayered addressee structure is characteristic of DP-era Lithuanian literature and reflects how private grief and national mourning were fused in the diaspora literary imagination. This volume is thus a primary source not only for Lithuanian literary history but for the psychology and culture-building strategies of the entire Baltic DP experience.

Why It Matters

Culturally and historically, 'Be Tavęs' is a direct artifact of the moment when Lithuanian civilization was most at risk of permanent erasure. Published in 1946 in a Displaced Persons camp, one year after the Soviet re-occupation of Lithuania, it represents the first generation of diaspora cultural production — made by people who did not yet know whether they would ever return home, whether Lithuania would survive as a cultural entity, or whether Lithuanian would remain a living literary language. That they published poetry anyway, with illustrations, with careful attention to literary quality, is itself a historical statement of the highest order.
